So, despite our better advise, your own better judgement and the with less than reliable knowledge- Some people still insist on being the infamous DIY Pest Control Technician. For those of you who respect this advice…Thank you, the environment could use more of you. For those of you who do not. Please offer up a little bit of your time and read through this before taking matters into your own hands this fall. Whether targeting insects, rodents, or wildlife a few simple rules apply which can greatly decrease the likelihood that your actions will have residual effects on environments outside your own. Again. TheBugGuys.ca in no way recommends domestic applications of pest control products by untrained individuals. However, in the interest of public safety. We offer advice on the safe application thereof. 1. Research Your Enemy. Controlling populations of living, breathing and thinking specimen is a task even when equipped with the proper knowledge. Therefore taking on these populations with limited knowledge is likely to result in failure. Some consistencies exist throughout pest control which may help you target, and direct your control efforts. Likewise without accurate knowledge of your target specimen’s habits in relation to its environment- control procedures are very ineffective. Start with understanding the intruder behaviour, then establish which types of living environments your target prefers. Once you understand this, establish a favourable food source and consider the following in preparation for your controlled approach. By targeting and directing your approach you can limit the likelihood that non-target specimen will come into contact with control products. 2. Tamper Resistance. We live in a country where we are blessed with environmental laws which are generally viewed as relatively strict in comparison to our close neighbour. However, this doesn’t mean that everything available to the consumer is safe. In Canada when applying any type of bait or control product it is imperative to ensure these are applied using a Tamper Resistant control device. Tamper resistance refers to the inability of non-target specimen being able to access the baits or otherwise poisonous control product. When applying such products it is important to ensure that children, pets and animals you are not targeting cannot get at the control product. In any case where applied in an unsafe fashion- MSDS and labelling laws are being broken and the environment is at risk. 1. No Overkill. Proper research is imperative here to understanding the importance of the dangers associated with the “overkill early” approach. “Overkill Early” refers to the indiscriminate use of large amounts of pesticide without the need for it. If educated properly and understanding of your target specimens habits, it is not required to use excessive amounts of control product. Usually occurring in cases where an individual thinks that applying more of the product will expedite the results- this is a dangerous and wreck-less approach and shows a complete disregard for the environment surrounding. Labelling laws provide that control products must offer instructions on the use and application thereof. Disregarding these instructions is putting yourself, your environment and the public in general at risk. Ultimately when applying dangerous products it is up to us to ensure such is done in a safe, and controlled manor. Remember Research your enemy, apply product safely and never apply more than is required to eliminate your specific issue.
