We all love to make the most of our environment. However, what do we do when something else is also making the most of it? Whether an insect, rodent, or wildlife. Certain contributing factors exist which create an encouraging environment for intrusion. Without a working understanding of how to prevent pest intrusion efforts can be lacking in direction and target. Today our blog will attempt to address this and provide you with an easy working knowledge which can be employed anywhere to aid in preventing issues before they occur. Remember.
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”
1. Water Sources. No one can stop the rain. We understand this. However, ensuring that any standing or stagnant water around your home or business is eliminated can significantly limit available water sources. Without available water sources, pest intruders cannot survive and will find new harborage. (Hint: this is good practice to employ inside and outside. Fish tanks should be topped, sinks clear of standing water, yards, and window sills free of puddling wherever possible)
2. Food Sources. Food sources are entirely under our control. We can eliminate 100% of food source attractants both inside and outside with a proper understanding of why it is so essential. Given that we cannot eliminate all of the water sources available in our environment it is critical to control what we can. Food Sources. In terms of all pest intruders this is none discriminatory. Waste, fresh, organic, or synthetic. Pest intruders don’t care. Ensure garbage receptacles inside and outside are kept clean, and sealed from entry with lids. Never allow overflow, remove excess waste to exterior sealed refuse immediately. Ensure that any loose debris is routinely eliminated. Decomposing waste debris produces a smell which attracts pest intruders from distances up to 300 yards. Keeping a proper refuse control regiment at home and in your business is critical to eliminating food source attractants.
3. Harbourage Points. Harbourage points are points which can be within 30 yards, to 300 yards from the point of activity. Harbourage points are home base for your intruder. You cannot eliminate all harborage points. However, you can control the potential for harborage points around your home or business. Ensure that loose wood debris is pilled and organized at the rear of your yard. Eliminate any garden overgrowth or compost within 30 yards of your home. If you keep an onsite compost, place this at the rear of your yard to limit contact with your home. Bird feeders should not be placed on or within 30 yards of your home. These are food sources and should be used to keep pest intruders at a distance- not attract them. Decks and porches in extreme cases should be sealed from entry below as both provide immediate and costly issues if engaged by pest intruders.
One absolute constant remains in all cases. Without all three of the above points. Pests cannot exist in your environment. Food, Water AND harbourage is required in all cases for survival. Therefore, making a concerted effort to limit these attractants around your home or business will greatly benefit your pest control efforts. Far more than any poison ever will.
Hopefully it helps! Take a moment to like us on Facebook. We greatly appreciate the support.
