“Gorgeous Morning right?” “Beautiful, let’s go have coffee in the garden” Sounds like a plan right? Until you get to your garden and find all of the foliage around you destroyed. From bottom growth to top growth (Gardens and Trees) if your home is in an environment encouraging to destructive exterior pests. Your best bet is to start pro-active prevention now to avoid bigger issues in the following warm season. Today’s blog will provide simple preventative techniques that can be employed by the home or business owner to limit local populations of destructive exterior pests. Southwestern Ontario is most active between May-September. Applications of these tips should be employed throughout this season. Once weekly will provide significant and noticeable results. 1. Washing Intruders from the affected area using a hose or power washer. Exterior destructive pests are typically a topical issue. Meaning that the activity is not actually integrated with the tree. Being that this is not infesting in nature, simply removing the pest will buy you relief for a short time. Unfortunately without any residual protection (See below) the intruders will slowly return and the process of removing them will start again. 2. Home and Garden preventative product application. Most hardware and retail outlets sell products designed for “Home and Garden” use. Most cases require professional technicians to apply pesticides. However, these products are designed and labelled for safe application and will effectively eliminate all intruders in the treatment area. Using a product that connects to your hose will provide the most range of application. Residual active ingredients will likewise stick around for 2-3 weeks post application to provide further protection from re-introduction of Exterior destructive pest intruders. 3. Regular Pruning of leaves, dead branches, foliage touching structures. Exterior destructive pest intruders tend to prefer the foliage of Gardens, and Trees. Typically taking food and water sources directly from the leaf of the affected growth. Pruning any access foliage, ensuring dead branches and foliage touching your home or business will significantly limit potential attractants around your home or business. Likewise effective pruning techniques allow you to identify more easily the affected areas making application of control measures more targeted and effective in approach.
4. Utilizing all (3) methods systematically over the course of the season. By setting yourself up for success from the onset of warmer northern weather exterior intruders will find lacking support in your environment and find a more suitable place to set up shop. If employing all (3) preventative techniques you should initiate control practices at the beginning of the season. Most effective initial applications are applied between mid-April to mid-June and continued attention to detail should be employed from May through September. If employed properly, this approach attacks all areas of concern. Intruders are removed from the source using water to wash them out. Intruders are kept at bay using liquid residual home and garden products to protect the affected area from re-introduction. Foliage is limited to allow easier identification of intruders immediately upon introduction. When addressed pro-actively most Exterior Destructive Pest intruders stand little to no chance of setting up shop in your environment.
