One of the most disheartening situations a PCT can come across is that of the DIY Pest Control Technician ( theBugGuys.ca DIY tips are designed to aid homeowners- these are simple tips and do not encompass the entire breadth of the situation- much like search engines. Our tips are generalized to provide elementary advice). DIY Pest Control Technicians are home owners, business owners and self-proclaimed experts without licensed credentials. After being in the industry for the better half of ten years it has become apparent that the general public has a very narrow view point in terms of environmental control. Most consumers seem to take the approach that “poison is poison is poison” Under this assumption a number of things can go wrong…and indeed usually do. Today we will address some qualifying factors that will help in identifying whether or not your environmental issue is one you can resolve yourself. Or whether you need a professional. Let me be clear about one thing however. In all cases relating to your environment theBugGuys.ca heavily advocates professional advice. Understanding that not everyone will take this advisement our blog today is to attempt to provide aid in making the right decision. Whether or not this occurs…is entirely up to the consumer. 1. Establishing whether an issue is related to the inside or outside of your home or business is crucial. -Monitor the intruder closely. Don’t just run to the hardware store and grab the first product with a recognizable picture. When dealing with living specimen it is important to identify correctly what you’re dealing with in order to properly understand how to eliminate it.

2. What if the issue is related to the exterior? -If you catch the issue entering your home from the exterior- it’s a good bet you need a professional as the environment outside your home or business is a variable outside your control. Likewise- applying control products outside without understanding the nature of the active ingredient can be devastating to non-target populations. Finding out if a product is selective or non-selective should be a primary concern when purchasing products for your exterior environment. Selective products are researched and developed to affect only the populations targeted. Non-selective products will simply kill anything it touches. Again choosing to walk outside and apply control products on your own, without working knowledge of what they do, and how they will interact with your environment is not appropriate. Choices like this can affect the environment up to 300 yards from the active point. 3. What if the issue is related to the interior? -If you catch the issue making harborage inside your home the issue becomes even more sensitive on a personal level. Pest intruders can wreak mental havoc on home and business owners. When the issue is related directly to the structure it can be even worse from a psychological standpoint. Home and Business owners feel embarrassed, guilty, or responsible for the issue. Whether or not this is true is really irrelevant to control measures. Once an issue is identified inside it is important to drop the blame game and start working on a solution. Eliminating food and water sources is always the most effective course of action. However, in most situations- food and water are available due to human populations. Consumers tend then to drop the research and identification approach and attempt to expedite a solution using products available to the public. In almost all cases these products are not target specific, they contain a repellant that does not control the problem- it simply moves it from one area to another. Therefore you can imagine the dismay when a professional PCT shows up and finds out a client has taken a small controllable issue and spread it throughout the active area using repellant products. Likewise in most cases these products contain chronic carcinogens and are applied around human populations without warning, proper MSDS research and a disregard for human health. To say the least- this is in immediate disregard of public health. Professional PCT’s are compelled by law to apply products safely and in a diligent fashion and this is why they provide your safest line of defense against pest intruders. Not Home Depot, not Walmart, not Canadian Tire. No Soaps, cooking products, spices, bleaches or degreaser will provide the same level of security in your decision as a PCT. Hopefully it helps!
